Zaragoza, 7-8th June 2023

The GRAPE group recently presented their research at the IV ICLHE Spain Regional Group Symposium held at the Universidad de Zaragoza. This year’s symposium, entitled «Supporting teaching and learning in ICLHE: from policies to students,» was organized by CLIC@unizar and the ICLHE Regional Group Spain, and took place June 8th and 9th.

The symposium brought together researchers and professionals in English-Medium Education (EME) from across Spain to share their experiences and engage in discussions. The event featured two keynote speakers, Dr. Maria Kuteeva from Stockholm University (Sweden), and Dr. Thomas Morton from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. The symposium focused on various aspects of ICLHE/EME and aimed to explore ways to support high-quality teaching and learning in the context of higher education. Participants presented institutional-level support plans and strategies, as well as pedagogical techniques and resources that enhance the teaching and learning process.

Actively involved as we are in this topic, we could not miss the opportunity to share the research we have been conducting until now in our group. Noelia Ruiz Madrid talked about translanguaging and trans-semiotizing practices in EMI lectures, with the aim of gaining insight into the theoretical and pedagogical implications that translanguaging can have on EMI teacher professional development. Then, Inmaculada Fortanet-Gómez and Miguel Ruiz-Garrido talked about the integration of H5P activities in EMI. They collaborated with a lecture in EMI and designed an interactive experience to complement a video lecture in the discipline in question. The activities aimed at fostering overall content comprehension, and to scaffold technical language.

Our Ph.D. students also presented at this symposium. Enzo Boggio López presented a data-driven taxonomy to analyze lecturers’ discourse in EMI, focusing on the acknowledgment of lecturers to the contributions made by students’ contributions to foster participation. Nuria Escobar Lluch presented for the first time in this symposium. She presented part of the tentative results from her thesis, exploring the implications of translanguaging in the case of an EMI lecturer in the field of business administration.

Both students are conducting their thesis on the topic of English Medium of Instruction, under the supervision of Noelia Ruiz-Madrid, and also Vicent Beltrán-Palanques in Enzo’s case.

The IV ICLHE Spain R.G. symposium provided a platform to address the complex challenges and opportunities in delivering courses in English within the university setting and encouraged proposals that showcased positive outcomes and innovative approaches to improve ICLHE teaching and learning.
