The GRAPE team visits Vigo (Spain) for the 32nd European Systemic Functional Linguistics Conference, which took place from June 15th to 17th, 2023. Organized by the LVTC (Language Variation and Textual Categorisation) research group at the University of Vigo, the conference’s theme focused on (Cognitive) developments in multimodal (digital) communication, aiming to expand the boundaries of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL).

The conference held particular significance for our team as we introduced our newly developed software, the MARS (Multimodal Annotation Research Software), for the first time. During the presentation titled «Technological advances in digital discourse analysis: A new multilayer annotation tool for multimodal analysis,» Noelia Ruiz-Madrid, Edgar Bernad-Mechó, and Julia Valeiras-Jurado showcased the software and its capabilities.

In addition, our collaborator Lorena Bort-Mir from the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, along with Inmaculada Fortanet-Gómez, discussed the implications of multimodal material in ESP (English for Specific Purposes) courses. Their presentation, titled «Analyzing how ESP students process multimodal materials through the eye-tracking technique,» shed light on the ways in which students interact with and comprehend multimodal resources.

You can read more about our contributions in the Book of Abstracts, and learn more about the conference on their website.
